host: how is mitch mcconnell looking to the right? guest: this deal is a bad deal for conservatives. i don't know how he can, he's very smart and he's very -- you know, he's willing to make-up popular stands in order to get what republicans want. but this deal is a terrible deal. i think a lot of conservatives will say if nothing happens we'll be in a better position. he he made a number of fumbles along the way that got us to this place. i think at the moment he is getting a little bit more ire from conservatives. host: what did you make of the president's news conference? guest: he comes out and says we need to work together and stop trying to score political points. then he goes on to trash the motives of republicans. "we believe in something. you have your mandate. we have our mandate." i find that to be small and petty. this is it high point for him. this deal he got is a fantastic deal. he is going to have to go back to people and raise more taxes. he said this is not going to work. i think he was lying down the marker. this may

i like what mitch mcconnell has said. i like the part about the president and him coming to agreement on some parts there. but you know, the president is a good speaker and always has been. but when it comes to listening to the speech, i could quote you the rest of the line. ram things down the throats, that will never happen. you know, they took the elite few and went behind closed doors and click -- crammed down the health care bill. i do not know what the deficit was when the president came into office, but we know that it keeps climbing higher and higher and we definitely need to get -- i run my household this way. if i cannot afford something, i cannot put the money into it. >> thank you for the call. four years ago the debt was about $12 trillion. as of today, we are close to $16.40 trillion. you can get that from the u.s. debt clock. we have a web site at c- span.org, about the fiscal cliff, leading up to this december 31 deadline, you can check it out anytime on our website. you can also weigh in on our facebook p

i just wish that john boehner and mitch mcconnell would have some more backbone and the tables and say we heard. read about blaming republicans, and boehner said it on the senate floor, but they need to come to the podium today or tomorrow and say senator reid, we recently passed two bills are sitting on the fiscal cliff cristeta sitting on your desk and you have the audacity to blame republicans. i think they're both to blame someone. reid a little more so. we see what happens. obama has led this country. he is about to lead us into another debt downgrade. it should be evident to see what happens when you let partisan democrats like harry reid and nancy pelosi call the shots. >> marty, you are calling on the democrat line. what is your reaction? caller: the president needs to get the republicans come back in from christmas holiday. >> what do you think is gonna happen? >> we are on the verge of a fiscal cliff and they are still on vacation. >> let's go to mike in texas, on our line for republicans. >> i agree with the first guy. i wish they would have a little backbone and force obama

as for the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell, i think that is a good one. a lot has been made in the past few days about him taking a higher profile role in these negotiations. while i don't like prognosticating into the future, we can look at the past in some of the previous negotiations of congress and the kind of role he has played. almost all of these talks, whether it was about government shutdown in the spring of 2011 or the debt limit debate in the summer of 2011 or the payroll tax-cut debate last year, those negotiations started at a level between the president and speaker but always broke down at that level and that pushed to the senate where harry reid and mitch mcconnell had to figure something out and get enough votes for it so they could give some cover to the house republicans, who were joined by a large majority of house democrats to get something done. the idea that we have come to this state is not necessarily surprising. that it has taken us so long to get there has probably frustrated everyone who wanted to take a holiday break. if mitch

today i also recognize my colleague, republican leader mitch mcconnell. i have stood next to him on the senate floor now for a long time, and there is no cause for which he has been more pronounced in doing something about than aung san suu kyi and burma. i extend my congratulations, my admiration and i applaud him for his good work. he has been a long standing advocate in the united states to focus on burma and what is wrong there with the ruling junta. he co-sponsored the economic sanctions bill that helped push the regime toward freedom. sometimes people think it is hard for the two parties of congress to find common ground. lots of times it is. but i am pleased that where the burma policy is concerned, there has been no split between democrats and republicans. i'm grateful to senator mcconnell for his leadership on this issue, not just for the last few days or months, but for two decades. i also commend secretary clinton and the many foreign service as operatives who dedicate their time and talents to liberty abroad. state department officials often p
